::The cat thinks and solves problems
and has the ability to learn:: The domestic house cat is a subspecies of
the wild cat and is also an intelligent predator animal.. and capable of being trained to
obey commands and manipulate simple mechanisms:: they
learn by trial and error, observation and imitation:: Cats' learning abilities are
aided by their good memory. Research that was done at University of
Michigan and the Department of Animal Behaviour at the American Museum
of Natural History has found cats to have memory about two-hundred
times better than dogs:: some cats may prefer the taste of fresh
water to the water in their dishes so they learn to how operate
the faucet by watching a human using the water:: A
cat can retrieve objects from hard to reach places when playing by
trying different ways, changing paws, position, and using logic as
a human would:: Cats can be trained to make use of a toilet, but
need no training to use a litter box to cover up their waste,
because of their sensitive sense of smell::
::The word cat derives from Old
English catt.. including Latin cattus.. Byzantine
Greek κάττα.. Old Irish cat.. and Old Church Slavonic kotka::
The domestic cat was named Felis catus by Carolus Linnaeus in Systema Naturae in 1758.. Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben named
the domestic cat Felis domesticus in the Anfangsgründe der
Naturlehre and Systema regni animalis of 1777.The domestic cat is
now considered a subspecies of the wild cat by the International Code of Zoological
Nomenclature:: A group of cats is referred to as a
clowder.. a male cat is called a tom.. and a female is called
a queen.. an immature cat is called a kitten or catling:: A
cat whose ancestry is formally registered is called a pedigreed
cat.. purebred cat or a show cat.. cats of mixed ancestry are
referred to as domestic longhairs and shorthairs
or random-bred.. moggies.. mongrels.. mutt-cats or alley cats::
::World's
oldest cat 34 years old.. but usually
live14 to 20 years.. the World's oldest feral cat named "Mark" lived to 26 years of age and was maintained by
the British charity Cats Protection:: A
Cats weight is
between 2.5 and 7 kg (5.5–16 pounds).. the Maine Coon cat can exceed
11.3 kg (25 pounds).. with some reaching up to 23 kg
(50 pounds) due to overfeeding:: Cats
are capable of reaching speeds of about 50 km/h
(about 30 mph).. and can jump over
2 meters (over 7 feet) vertically
from a stationary position::
because a cat doesn't possess rigid collarbones, it allows it to fit through an opening about
the size of its head::
::Cats sleep up to 20 hours in a 24-hour period.. they conserve
energy by sleeping more than most animals, from 12–16 hours which increases as they grow older.. the term cat nap refers to
the cat's ability to fall asleep lightly for a brief period:: Due to their crepuscular nature, cats
are enter a period of increased hyperactivity and playfulness
during the evening and early morning.. also
known as "the evening
crazies".. "night crazies" or
"mad half hour"::
::Cats are like camels and walk by
moving both legs on one side and then both legs on the other unlike dogs and other mammals.. while most mammals move legs on alternate
sides in sequence:: Most
cats have 4 claws at the rear and 5 at their front paws::
::Cats "always
land on their feet" most of the time after a fall as it reflexively twist its
body and rights itself using
its acute sense of balance and
flexibility.. known as the
cat's "righting reflex".. always righting itself in the same way, provided
it has the time to do so during a fall..
thus a high multi-story fall can be less
dangerous than those of only a few meters. Some cats have survived falls from heights up to 10 stories.. and contrary to popular belief, cats
without a tail also have this
ability::
::The cat's highly advanced senses include.. hearing.. eyesight.. taste.. touch and smell.. Tests indicated that a
cat's vision is superior at night and
inferior in daylight.. and can
apparently differentiate among colours::
::Cats whiskers generally equal about 12 on
each cheek.. the whiskers
technically known as vibrissae
can aid with navigation and
detect very small shifts in air currents..
and may choose to rely on the
whiskers in dim light.. the whiskers are roughly as wide as the cat's
body enabling it to
judge if it can fit through small
openings:: whiskers also indicate a cat's attitude.. pointing forward when a cat is inquisitive and friendly.. and flat on the face when
the cat is being defensive or aggressive::
::Cats cannot taste sugary foods according to National Geographic issue on the 8th December 2005, due to a
faulty sweet receptor gene.. believed to be related to the cat's diet
being naturally high in protein::
::Cats sun bake
because they enjoy heat exposure.. preferring warmer temperatures than humans
do.. while humans become uncomfortable
when their skin's temperature gets higher than about 44.5 °C
(112 °F).. cats
don't start to show discomfort until their skin reaches about
52 °C (126 °F):: being
closely related to desert animals, cats can easily withstand the heat
and cold of a temperate
climate, but not for extended periods::
::Cats dislike water immersion except for the Turkish Van breed,
which has an unusual
fondness for water.. along with
Abyssinians who are also reported to be tolerant
of water::
::The Cat reproduction
process can be very loud, as both cats vocalize loudly.. if one is not used to the sounds of
cats mating, it will sound like a cat fight:: The size of a litter averages 3 to 5 kittens:: Female cats normally
reach sexual maturity at 4-10 months.. and males at 5-7 months::
::3-4 million cats
and dogs are euthanized each year in the United States because there are more
animals being born than there are homes
due to owners not spaying or neutering pets to help keep the pet over population down:: and rather than purchasing pets,
people
should adopt them
from shelters::
