The 'Purple Haze' radio show was born mid 1985
and its time slot was midnight to dawn twice every eight weeks or so.

These days it can be heard on Saturday nights at 9.00PM only on 3MDR, 97.1 FM Melbourne Australia.
It was originally targeted at the 'older'  listeners and still is, but it also attracts many younger ones as well.
The program is an album show but not contemporary albums. 99% of the music comes from the late 60's and the 70's.
Frinstance; you wont hear Blood Sweat and Tears or Chicago but you will hear S.O.D. and Mogul Thrash.
You won't hear Kraftwerk but you will hear Tangerine Dream (Most weeks I have a 'trippy' album in the program)
Anyway to cut to the chase, the program focuses on non mainstream bands from the above mentioned era.
See how many of these names you can remember.
Spooky Tooth..Juicy Lucy.. Colosseum..The Keef Hartly Band.. Thirsty Moon..Soft Machine.. Dr John...Atomic Rooster...Savoy Brown..
The ORIGINAL Fleetwood Mac..
Captain Beyond...Jethro Tull...Embryo...Grobschnidt ..Goblin...Stomu Yamashta... Cream...Frank Zappa.. King Crimson.
Traffic
... Uriah Heep..Wishbone Ash Rush...Scorpions... Little Feat...Heaven ... Alman Bros...Jeff Beck...Pavlov's Dog...Maggie Bell...
Stone the Crows...Focus...Finch...Jade Warrior ...Cactus...Vanilla Fudge...

I could go on forever but I think you've got the idea by now, NO GOOD TIME OLDIES.
Having said that however,You will hear some classic albums;
Led Zeppelin...Black Sabbath... Pink Floyd...Deep Purple...Crosby Stills and Nash...
As you can see, it's a mixed bag of genres, the only thing they have in common is the era
Oh... I nearly forgot to mention
  Hendrix..The Doors
Jefferson Airplane etc etc etc......

And it's worth remembering that I play whole sides of LPs and if it happens to be a concept (eg Thick As A Brick-Jethro Tull) album, then I'll usually play the whole album.
Likewise live albums. (Sat 14th January 2006,I played the whole Cream concert form June of last year. That was almost 2hrs.)
Anyway if you're a serious fan of non mainstream music of the late 60s through to1980
and you haven't caught the show you are missing out.

In fact I've had people call me telling me how much they hate going out on a saturday night in case they miss something good.

More often than not I give details of line ups or line up changes and if someone from that era makes a new album (eg John Mayal) I will play that too.

First up we have Grobschnidt, one of the best rock bands to come out of Germany in the 70's
The album is "Live Solar Music", an extended version of the origanal song that took up both sides of one vinyl LP.
Now it takes up a whole CDand it's the band at there peak.

Then another German band that this time completely reworked their the album on the map.
Tangerine Dream (no surprises there) and the album is Phaedra, all digital.

Then finally, another German band, Guru Guru. This is a trio
that really know how to have a good time and they do go to some very interesting places even though they're
<>only average players. The recording was made at Radio Bremen, Germany on Sept 21 1971 and although a little 'dry' it's OK.
I'll give you more details during the show, anyway suffice it to say that it would be well worth your while staying home
this Saturday night.

This week I am very pleased to present  another of the great Tangerine Dream Concerts. This one was recorded at the Palais Du Sport in Paris, recorded in 1976. This gig is hailed as being omongst the best they ever did. Although it is a bootleg recording, the sound is great, even if the stereo is a little narrow. The bulk of this show was completely improvised though you will (if you're a diehard like me)hear some familiar themes
The lineup on this recording is my favorite and it was at this time that the band did some of its most innovative music.
Peter Bauman
Edgar Froese
and Chris Franke
So buckle up and prepare yourself for the ride of a lifetime.
9.00 this Saturday night on 97.1 3MDR.
Oh yes, this gig will take up most of the program.

           Roach's Rave March 2006

NEWSFLASHNEWSFLASHNEWSFLASHNEWSFLASH.....

Reports are coming in saying cities around the world are being attacked by a prehistoric monster preditor.
Scientists believe it to be a Penisaurus, and a very nasty prick it is too.
Reports say it was first seen in Paris, near the Eiffel Tower which, when subjected to the Penisaurus'
one eyed stare began to melt and shrivel up, after which the monster sprayed the city with
its deadly venom causing widespread vomiting.Citris farmers however are
overjoyed at the prospect of a bumper lemon crop in the months to come.

Wait a moment

A report just in says that the Penisaurus destroyed the White House just by looking at it with its
one eye before once again spraying the area with its venom.Fortunately the building was
unoccupied at the time but President Bush and his Cabinet members did endure the full brunt
of the monster's poisonous ejaculation, however it appears none of them were adversly effected.(odd that).
President Bush immediately contacted his deputy sherrif in Canberra to inform him that the
Penisaurus was on its way Down Under. The Deputy, Little Johhny, relieved that something had come up
that would finally get the AWB scandal off the front pages swung into action ordering an enquiry with wide ranging
powers to investigate the matter and to have a report of its findings ready in six weeks.
On its arrival, the Penisaurus looked at Ayers Rock and it shrivelled up as did everything else it looked at.
The military has failed to halt the advance of the killer prick which has since made its way to the
nation's capital where it has as yet, done no harm. For details as they come to hand stay tuned to 97.1 3mdr."

At this point the Tecoma Cowboy, his head in a bucket happily producing another premium batch
of organic paint stripper after enduring Big Merv's rendition of The Ode To Joy from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
Yep you guessed it Ode To Merv!!
Can you really blame TC for wanting to make more paint stripper?
Anyway, sensing an opportunity of some sort he pulls his head from the friendly bucket,
looks across at his semi comatose mate and says, "What d'ya reckon mate, wanna go up there and blow this thing away?"
"Nah," says the big fella,"there's that many big pricks up there anyway, one more won't matter a stuff."
"Funny how it hasn't wrecked Canberra" says TC thoughtfully as he cracks a tube
Merv belches and says " It probably knows they're distant kin so it doesn't want to heart 'em.....bloody shame that."

Then the news gets worse. The Penisaurus is heading south and true to form destroys every thing it looks at.
Within hours it's on its relentless way to Melbourne.

Merv and TC spring into action and head for the 'Para' for some fortication and its here that
Merv decides to make his stand .Climbing up on the roof of the 'Para' he unfirls a huge flag with a picture of
Kylie's bum on it in the hope that it might deter the monster from doing any further harm.

Meanwhile TC is updating the website.

The Penisauris finally arrives in the Dandenongs having destroyed everything in its path.

From his vantage point Merv can see the havoc being caused as each building the Penisaurus
looks at shrivels up.Each person the Penisaurus looks at shrivels up.
Every thing it looks at shrivels up. Then slowly the huge monster turns its gigantic head in the' Big M's'
direction suddenly mesmerised at the sight of Kylie's bum waving in the summer breeze, but it too shrivels up.
Merv then drops his pants realising that the fate of the world rests on him.

He must save the world!!

Frantically he waves his arms about, all three of them, and the Penisaurus lowers its head, looks at Big Merv and IT shrivels up!!!!!
Big Merv Skilton ..still the biggest prick on the face of the Earth.

Rumours are rife of an impending knighthood for the great man

Merv made no comment when asked about the incident, all he said was 'go to merv.com.au'

Roaches Rave February 2006

Now I've been hearing a nasty rumour that Big Merv is a bit of a woos because he visits
people and then falls asleep on their couch cos he can't hold his substances.
You know what? They're TRUE.

He does and he can't. TC and I were seriously considering giving him
mouth to mouth but neither of us could bring ourselves to do it. TC was going to go home
without him but in the end we thought it might be a better idea if we simply bashed
him playfully about the head and groin. All this did however was to produce
a  sound not unlike that of a Brontosaurus breaking wind, which,
come to think about it ,is what he always sounds like,
so it was a trifle difficult to tell whether he was waking up, snoring,
practising for his fabulous radio show, or , like the brontosaurus, simply breaking wind.
Then TC (who by now was getting a tad anxious) decided it was time for some
liquid fortification in order to better overcome this rather challenging and life changing
experience and cracked a tube.
SNAP FIZZZZZ GLUG GLUG GLUG and miracle of miracles,Merv wakes up.
No, not straight away. First his mouth stated moving. At first TC and I stood dumbfounded,
dazed and confused as Big Merv began sucking on a big juicy well rounded....Tinny.
TC smiled and said to me "Watch this mate," then he put the tinny to Big Mervs mouth.
The big fella , still fast asleep, reached for it and began carressing it and stroking it .
Lovingly he held in both hands and making those Brontosaurus like sounds he began singing
"Did You Ever In Your Life See A Diver Kiss His Wife While The Bubbles Bounced About Above The Water?"
After that he (still half asleep)gave us his version of the Beatles' All You Need Is Merv.

By this time TC had his head in a bucket and was producing lots of paint stripper
so moved was he by the soaring falsetto of The Big M's melodic utterences.
When Merv finished both his singing and his tinny,he slumped back down
onto the couch shouting, "Eat shit....fifty million flies can't be wrong."

Just then Anton arrives calming TC down by telling him that everything would be OK,
it was just the big fella getting in touch with his female side,
something that TC hadn't witnessed before.
Anton told us (in strictest confidence,of course) that The Big M had spent the last few days
trying to have a sex change operation but was unsucksessful as each doctor he asked refused,
saying that the world could not afford to lose such a great artist, raconteur, statesman and bullshitter.

I HEARTILY AGREE.

May Jupiter Optimus Maximus watch over you
