Merv, AK, TC, and I ventured into town to the Rob Roy Hotel in Fitzroy
to catch 'Bam Bam'.
There was a mix up with changed playing times
& Merv was late getting back from Mirboo with the Nancy Mobile.
To cut a long story short, they had just arrived at the pub at 9.30 as
the last
chord from Bam Bam's set was struck. I think it was a D major, and was
played
with both passion and flair by guitarist Paul Montagu. The rhythm section
consisting of 'Gep' on drums & Aleks on bass were right on their
game as well.
Kristie Montagu, on vocals said 'Goodnight, we are Bam Bam' with
her
usual charisma. We all caught up with Paul,Kristie ,Aleks and Gep from
the band
and stayed around to catch the 2 other acts. Looks
like 'Revolver'in Prahran on Feb 16th with
the Kissingers will be
one to catch.
'Fur
Patrol'are a 3 piece Rock outfit
consisting of 3 Expatriate Kiwis who
moved here 5 years ago. Julia Deans,guitar/vocals, Simon Braxton on
drums,
& Andrew Bain on the bass were a revelation.
Merv is gonna get some of their past recordings to play on the radio
show.

December 2005 Today we
announced the winners in
Merv's Australian Radio Idol Series 2 Click Here for details
Early
in the New Year I will be speaking On Air to
one of Australia's
finest musical talents, Geoff Achison,
who is spoken
about in the
same breath as Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan
overseas but is
comparatively unknown here in
his home country of Australia.
Geoff
learned to play
listening to
the few old blues LPs he could find at his local record
store.
He
heard wah-wah pedals, slides and distortion
and had no idea these
effects were
done with boxes and pedals
so he tried to imitate them with just his
guitar.
He developed his own style and practically invented a unique
way of
playing the blues.
Tributes include "The best guitar player you've possibly
never heard of and
easily one
of the best players on the planet."
