An excellent example of
weaponry and veteran of over 75 wars..
easy to use as displayed by child soldiers overseas.. now used by
over 50 armies of the world..
comes
complete with a years
worth of free ammunition.. only 10,000 available..
The AK-47
(Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947 Автомат
Калашникова образца 1947 года) is a gas operated assault
rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov.. produced by Russian manufacturer
IZH. The AK-47 is lighter than most auto loading rifles.. more
compact.. shorter range.. smaller cartridges.. with selective
fire.
The AK-47
is one of the most popular assault rifles in the world.
Germany
was the first to develop
weapons most similar to the
modern assault rifle during the second
world war.. based
on the fact most
military modern warfare would
occur at 100 to 300
meters..so an intermediate-power
cartridge and firearm combining the features of a submachine gunwas required a range of 300
meters.. manufacturing
costs were reduced by
shortening the 8mm Mauser
cartridge to 33mm and using a lighter bullet. The Germans
werethe first to produce a
number of this type during the war and deeply influenced Russian
doctrine after the war.
Mikhail
Kalashnikov began studying automatic weapons design while still in the
hospital after being
wounded in the battle of Bryansk. His initial attempt at designing a
new submachine gun offered no significant innovations or advantage over
other designs and Sudayev's PPS43submachine gun was preferred
to Kalashnikov's design..so he redesigned his losing design
after examining a German StG44 in 1946.. and was possibly chosen to
lead a team of designers for propaganda value due to his war-hero
status rather than for his expertise.Mikhail
denies it was based
on the German assault rifle..and today is best described
as a hybrid of several previous innovations. The AK-47 borrows its cartridge
concept.. weapon layout.. gas system.. and construction methods from the
StG44..and the safety is surprisingly
similar to the Browning
designed Remington Model
8 rifle.The genius in the
design of the Kalashnikov rifle is in the simplification of those
contributing designs and adaptation to mass production by relatively
unskilled labour. The AK-47 can be seen as a fusion of the best that
the M1 Garand offered combined with the best aspects of the StG44.
The AK-47
is simple and inexpensive to manufacture and easy to clean and maintain..it's
ruggedness and reliability are legendary. The large gas piston,
generous clearances between moving parts, and tapered cartridge case
design allow the gun to endure large amounts of foreign matter without
failing to cycle. This reliability comes at the cost of accuracy, as
the looser tolerances do not allow the precision and consistency that
are required of more accurate firearms..
accuracy was not the feature most desired of this design..reflecting Soviet infantry doctrine
of its time, the rifle is meant to be part of massed infantry fire, not
long range engagements.
1947 Base
model manufacture for all AK-47's started and continued
to 1959. (several
countries still manufacture a modernized version today)
1961
Kalashnikov machine guns were
adopted by the Army.. the PKS: heavy machine gun.. the PKB: armoured carrier
machine gun.. the PKT: tank
machine gun.
1990The Army was equipped with the
modernized Kalashnikov submachine gun
AK-74Mwith folding
plastic butt.
1991The modernized
Kalashnikov light
machine guns RPK-74M was adopted in
armament.. and today include the 100 series.
